We need both well functioning capitalism, and well functioning democracy for the good life in the United States. Republicans have destroyed both. Capitalism without Competition is monopoly. Democracy with rigged elections is tyranny.
For the good life to be open for all, we need both fair democracy and competitive capitalism. We need something else also: good governance.
In today’s United States we have none of these three. Capitalism needs strong competition as a necessary condition for prosperity. In the United States we have a ubiquitous monopoly which steals the productivity growth we need to maintain our high standards of living.
We need each vote to equal one vote. Our biased voter suppression leads to rigged elections in our representative republic. We have a long history of suppressing the votes of disadvantaged citizens. We have a long history of the rich getting more protection and privileges than the poor. We need better electoral governance to make each vote to carry equal power.
We also need good governance To hold fair elections without giving unfair, advantages to people with money to spend on politics. Such distortions have crept into our elections.
So there are three necessary conditions for the good life: each citizen’s vote carries the same weight in governing democracy. One dollar carries the same weight as one dollar in the market. Ensuring the necessary conditions for both capitalism and democracy to produce the good life we want for all.
